The Art of Dirt - August - September 2010

The exhibition is a project of IDE-International Development Enterprises, a Denver-based non-profit working to cultivate prosperity in 13 countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America.  Part I of the exhibition features a photographic slide show of IDE farmers, farms and markets along with artwork from artists in IDE countries, in addition to installations of functioning water systems that have been developed through the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation-funded “Rural Prosperity Initiative.” These include water pumps, sprinklers, drip irrigation and storage systems that irrigate a tomato garden growing in the EventGallery.  Part II features paintings from artists in IDE countries, brought to Denver especially for this exhibition and offered for silent auction, with proceeds benefiting IDE.

IDE: “Nearly 90 percent of the world’s population has little or no access to the products and services many of us in the developed world take for granted,” says Andy Vermouth, IDE’s Senior Manager of Communications, “and nearly half do not have regular access to food, clean water or shelter.” The organizers at IDE believe that by helping people to sustainably increase their income, they will not only be able to address their basic needs but move towards lasting prosperity. Low-cost water technologies, access to better seeds and growing techniques, and better connections to markets are the foundation of the IDE approach to cultivating prosperity in Africa, Asia and Latin America. Paper or Plastic? Is this Show Green? - August – October 2008
An exhibition of mixed media works by a select group of nationally recognized artists, each considered a master of his or her craft, which asks a fundamental environmental question. Each artist was asked to select a work of art and include a discussion of the natural or man-made materials that went into its creation. The goals of the show are to educate artists and viewers about how the simple decisions we make every day affect the environment and to raise awareness of the materials that are incorporated into artwork.

A world map will be displayed next to each piece of art depicting the locations where ingredients for the artwork were sourced.  One year later, a second show will feature the same artists, exploring the effects that environmental awareness has had on their process of creating art.
